Sandtex Trade FAQs

Q When do I need to use a stabilising solution before application of Sandtex Trade masonry paint

A You only need to use Stabilising Solution if an undecorated surface is porous, or if a previously painted surface is chalking.   On new render, provided it is thoroughly dry in depth, two coats of Sandtex Trade Masonry paint can be applied direct unless the surface is porous in which case a stabilising solution is required.  Sandtex Trade Hydrobond, however, is a self-priming product, so if the surface is porous or chalking, just dilute the first coat with up to 10% clean water

Q How do I choose between Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth and Sandtex Trade Fine Textured Matt?

A Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth has a smooth, mid sheen finish, whereas Fine Textured Matt has an added aggregate which offers a lightly textured, matt finish.  On roughcast surfaces Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth would an excellent choice as it would be easier to apply and has a better spreading rate.  However, on smooth render if there are any fine, hairline cracks, Sandtex Trade Fine Textured Matt would be an ideal choice as it has the ability to bridge them.

Q Are there any limitations as to when Sandtex Trade can be applied?

A Always check the weather forecast before painting externally with Sandtex Trade.  You need to choose a period when there is no risk of rain or when the temperature is likely to fall below 8ºC.  However, Sandtex Trade Hydrobond can be applied in lower temperatures and is resistant to rain showers after 30 minutes.  Sandtex Trade 365 All Weather can be applied in adverse weather conditions and is resistant to rain showers after only 20 minutes.

Q Is Sandtex Trade breathable?

A All Sandtex Trade masonry products are moisture vapour permeable, which means that they stop ingression of water from the outside, whilst at the same time will allow any underlying moisture in the substrate to evaporate through the paint film.

Q Do I have to treat organic growth before applying Sandtex Trade

A Yes, it is essential that any organic growth is treated with Sandtex Trade Fungicidal Solution before applying Sandtex Trade masonry paint, as this  will kill off the spores and therefore help stop re-occurrence of the problem.

Q Is Sandtex Trade masonry paint safe to use in garden ponds?

A Sandtex Trade products are unsuitable for use in this situation as they contain a fungicide which could be harmful to plants and marine life and are also not durable enough for this area.  Ponds and pools need to be coated with specialised products. Your local Crown Decorating Centre can help you source these.
